Earthquakes Strike New Zealand
Multiple Earthquakes Hit Coast
Tsunami Warnings Issued, Now Lifted
Three earthquakes, including one of the strongest ever to hit the region, struck off the coast of New Zealand on Friday, triggering tsunami warnings that have now been lifted. The strongest quake, a magnitude 6.3, struck at 2:27 AM local time, about 125 miles northeast of Gisborne. Two other quakes, with magnitudes of 5.6 and 5.1, followed within an hour.
The earthquakes caused widespread shaking and some damage, but no injuries have been reported. The tsunami warnings were issued for the North Island of New Zealand, as well as the Chatham Islands and the Kermadec Islands. However, the warnings were lifted within a few hours, as the threat of a tsunami subsided..
The earthquakes are a reminder of the seismic activity that is common in New Zealand. The country is located on the boundary of the Pacific and Australian tectonic plates, which are constantly moving. As a result, New Zealand experiences frequent earthquakes, although most of them are small and cause little damage.
